The Principle

I do have a different opinion on the concept of Biodiversity to be "MANTAINED".
Nature is evolutionary by ... nature.!!
To try to Mantain it , and so to stop evolution , is the nost un-natural concept that endanger sustainability.
Humanity may evolve also , and even disapeear... this would be a glitch for nature.
I find "speed of avolution" a better , and more difficult concept.!!
The idea of mantaining the status quo of the today equilibrium on earth look wrong to me.
To respect the existing speed of evolution sound better.

HI Mike ... nice to cooperate on this forum

Alberto, You have hit on a

Alberto,

You have hit on a difficult question with many in-built traps.. I have struggled with it for a while and perhaps did not resolve it to complete satisfaction.

Respecting the existing speed of evolution implies a pasive postures which would be correct were it not for the fact that human actions now more then ever perhaps have become actual agents if evolutionary change. One could of course say that that is precisely a fact of evolution in action which seems to be consistent with your view.

Ther is another aspect here, however, and that is an understanding that for evolution to proceed requires a high variety realm (system). It apears that it is thet internal variety that is the source of the dynamic interaction that produce evolutionary changes.

Many human activities on the planet today have the impact of reducing the overall system variety (eliminating species and entire ecosystems) as a guideing principle we, as human, should seek to reduce such adverse impact, hence the idea of "maintaining."

I was cautious not to suggest increasing, or speeding up, since that opens up a whole pandora box which I wanted, perhaps erroneously, to avoid.
