The Underlying Premise

do you think the premise is correct? does it make sense to you?

The economy!!

The Underlying Premise is correct! The availablility of improvement is what we should be seeking. I believe that is exactly what Mr. Fuller accomplished. Not only in theory but in application most importantly. Increase the economy of the existing system. Perhaps the corruption of the capitalist system is the culprit and not capitalism itself.

corruption

Nathen- Corruption in this sense is ignorance. That's why the education thread is so active. People will do what they understand such as acting in the world using Malthus principles!

Otherwise, I agree with you.

Re last paragraph:
Our current industrial infrastructure is wasteful, destructive, fragmented and grossly inefficient. It could be reinvented, redesigned and reconfigured in order to deliver and enhance an enduring, regenerative advantage for all.

This is a serious and true condition. But we have to be quite clear that there are powerful enemies in positions of influence who deny this reality and are prepared to resist any serious change in this "status quo".

With "serpent-like wisdom" we have to discern the false legitimacy on which their power rests and expose the bogus assumptions supporting it.

Into the Cool

Per Sagan-Schneider's Into the Cool, our local situation is one of *surfing the solar gradient* -- meaning our local system plugs into the Sun (other stars), then reflects back what it cannot really use (the vast majority of the energy goes "to ground" i.e. radiates into space). Human systems are a part of this more encompassing system, which also includes things that'd destroy us if we let them (any good game has "challenges").

Anyway, I do not think it necessary that we view the problem as one of optimizing away all extravagant uses of energy, as if we're hoarding a finite supply in the face of certain and increasing Earthian chaos. That's true of some energy supplies, yes. I'm not trying to pitch this or that lifestyle in this context.

But I'm not into sponsoring this economists' "dismal science" meme, which pretends the 2nd law means ever worsening conditions aboard Spaceship Earth. That's not trully physics and is more about artificially lowering expectations as a part of a long-running propaganda campaign.

The biggest entropy increase is in the Sun itself, which overwhelms whatever little locally ordered world games we might play over the next several millenia. I expect we'll play many.

My premise is we can afford to live well and healthily over the long haul, on average.

That we're not already doing so (living well) to a much higher degree is more evidence of our lack of intellectual integrity, more than of any intrinsic energy shortfall.

We're slouches, slum lords, wallowing and warring in intellectual squalor.

But of course we're defensive against that observation -- seems kinda demeaning and we're a prideful crew (and pride in one's work needn't be a sign of decay).

For more thinking along these lines see: GST 2 -- part of what I'm calling Pentagon Math (more @ Math Forum).

Well said, Kirby. A thinker after my own heart and mind.

I only regret that I cannot stand up to the torrent of words that swept through here during the past four or so weeks.

Too many words buried the truth, for my feeble intellect. So I take as my intellectual life-line your article New Circuit Designs for Motherboard Earth.

re: do you think the premise is correct? does it make sense?

First, I agree that all physical processes providing the basis for human existence are subject to the primary laws of thermodynamics because they outline basic limits and as we are speaking in terms of tangible domains of human existence, there must be a type of limit to exist in the planes (Cartesian and other) of reality we know. Also, in our existence, we would be ignorant (and arrogant!) to expect that our productive potential in the use of resources would, exclusively, be unfettered by the laws that apply to the rest of the universe.

Second, it makes sense that the second law applies because I can see it in action everyday in my life: the increasing disorder is indeed obvious when looking at cells, individuals, society, countries, the globe, or the universe. Crime, political corruption, pollution, war, natural disasters, and disease all seem to be increasing as a byproduct of our “control of the disorder”> In example: new mutant strains of the HIV virus in response to vaccines, larger-scale wars as a result of interference in the name of peace, and resistant insects in response to stronger pesticides all reflect this increase in disorder as we attempt to inflict a decrease.

Thirdly, I agree strongly that our current industrial infrastructure needs a major “overhaul” (reinvention), but I don’t see how or when it might happen when those who have the power to implement or support changes don’t seem to care. If only there were a “group consciousness” that were responsible for the well-being of the entire system. Of course, then new ethical concerns arise such as who is to make judgment calls, and who truly knows what is best for the whole?

Interpretations and the Inverse of Newton's 2nd Law

'Order' and 'disorder' are, as with all human laryngral gruntings, merely words to representand transmit intellectual and experiential meanings. What some see as disorder, such as the chaotic movements of clouds or the mutation of viral or insectoid life forms can be seen as disorder relative to certain preconeived notions about structure and order but do not necessarily reflect the 'real reality' of the situation. Many theories about the development of life on this planet suggest that such chaotic clouds and genetic mutations were the very foundation of order and are the core elements in the developement of such complexly structured systems as the rain forest or the human brain.

Additionally, the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics accounts only for electro-magnetic energies, in radiational or knotted matter. The phenomenon of gravity, as well as other energetic phenomenon experienced by various individuals, seems to counter-act this 2nd Law. One such example, often villified, mis-interpreted or extremely idolized, but not irrelevent, were the observations, research and theories of Dr. Wilhelm Reich. According to Dr. Reich's theories there is a subtle form of energy, possibly related to or explaining gravition, that plays a fundamental role in the development of life-forms. This energy, the 'orgone', was observed to behave according to the inverse of Newton's 2nd Law of Thermodynamics.

Two thing should be noted in relation to the subject of entropy and negentropy, order and disorder. First, Universe appears to operate in the most efficient way possible, as Bucky noted. Universe, as a scenario of continuous change, requires interactions and processes to continue in order for change to continue. With this in mind it is highly probable that Universe incorporates principles and aspects that would continue the occurance of interactions and processes, a balance of entropy and negentropy, order and disorder.

Second, and perhaps most important, is the fact that human models, from Freudian psychology to Quantum Mechanics, mathematical logic to language and linguistics, are models of our experiences. These brain creations are human artifacts and as such are as faliable as the human brain, if not more. No model is the phenomenon or experience it describes. As Robert Anton Wilson said, "The map is not the territory; the menu is not the meal."

All of that aside, it I agree that our current infrastructure are in desperate need of an 'overhaul' of sorts. The overhaul I have in mind is less structured, however, and is based on the premise that humans, however noble, ethical or otherwise, opertate independantly. Each person makes their own decisions, regardless of what ideas or forces may influence them. What I suggest is to ackowledge this independence, to educate people of the fundamentally 'anarchistic' nature of human experience, and to acknowledge that all experiences and actions are equally valid, equally unique, and equally 'proper' in a Universal sense, for if something occurs in Universe it is by definition an allowable occurance in accordance with the laws of Universal operation.

There are terrible things that happen around the world everyday, and it is quite possible that this course of events with continue ad-infinitum. This is not to say that these terrible things are desirable, or inevitable. It simply means that they occur. If it is the desire of humans to admonish these behaviors it is fundamental to take it as a personal responsibility to remove such behaviors from our personal repetoir of actions. As 'wrong' or 'inappropriate' or 'terrible' as someone else's behavior may seem to us we must not allow it to influence to our behaviors in such a way as to illicit the same behaviors in ourselves.

Any system which illicits competitive behavior amongst it's participants will, it seems, illicit also the variety of thoughts and methods of action that are generally considered 'terrible' or 'wrong'. Lying, cheating and stealing are only viable possibilities in games designed with competition in mind. These behaviors are not viable possibilities in games established to illicit cooperation. Finite, competitive games have a finite, competitive life-span. Infinite, cooperative games have an infinite, cooperative life-span. I will leave this statement at that in hopes that someone may be compelled to ellaborate, validate, or refute this statement.
